USA: Hunters Find Bullets from American Civil War in 185-Year Old Alligator’s Hide

bullet2

Vicksburg| A group of Mississippi hunters who shot and killed an alligator weighting 910 pounds (413 kilograms) on Sunday, were amazed when they discovered that the animal already bore injuries caused by musket ammunitions from the Civil War era. A total of 9 spherical projectiles was found, and the various tests and analysis realized on them have confirmed that they were indeed fired at the animal in the 19th Century.

Nine of the wounds on the animal are believed to have been caused by Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-muskets. These old injuries were concentrated around the animals tail and hind legs, suggesting that the reptile could have possibly been used as a target for shooting practise by Confederate troops.

The huge animal also bore five other bullet wounds from three different calibers of hunting rifles, as well as many dents and scars, which shows that it survived many firearm injuries in the past. It did not however, survive the six .50-caliber bullets fired at him by the group of amateur hunters from Jackson, who were finally able to take it down.

The bullets were confirmed as authentic musket ammunitions from between 1850 and 1870.

The bullets were confirmed as authentic musket ammunitions from between 1850 and 1870.

This incredible animal specimen brings a whole new perspective on this large crocodilian reptile endemic to the southeastern United States. American alligators have been known for years to live well over 50 years and were thought capable of possibly living as long as 70 of 80 years, but this unique specimen was estimated to have been 185 years old at the time of its death.

Other reptiles like turtles, have been known to have lifespans of over 150 years, but it is the first specimen of crocodilian of such an old age ever found. It is also one of the biggest alligators ever killed in the United States. The heaviest ever recorded, weighing in at a staggering 1,011.5 lbs, was pulled out of a river in Alabama in August of this year.

  1. What a shame for such a beautiful animal to be killed for no reason.

    • the hunters could have placed some form of a radio-transmitter and hence monitored this veteran croc’s whereabouts in the marshes (or wherever they found it)… why kill it is beyond me.

    • Seriously? There are so many alligators all up and down the Southeast United States that any body of water large enough to hold a gator, probably has one in it. While the discoveries made from this particular specimen, postmortem mind, made it an unfortunate loss, if it hadn’t been killed we may have never known that it was even so old. Not to mention you can’t usually hunt alligators unless someone has reported an incident. The hunters may have not known how amazing the creature was when they shot it, but if they hadn’t we wouldn’t have either.

Why kill it? I wonder how long it could have lived? I guess they did not know it was that old.

    • Mike Williams | November 29, 2014 at 1:22 am |

No reason, how about food to feed hungry humans……

    • alligatorkiller13 | November 29, 2014 at 2:05 am |

its killed for meat the tail taste the best btw people kill animals for meat like deer hogs birds and other kinds

    • Go up to it and try to hug it, tell me it is a beautiful animal then.

    • Why did these men kill this animal???.
They look so pleased with themselves and yet they are murderes.
They should be more than ashmed of themselves.
They will have this poor animals blood on their hands for the rest of their pathetic lives.

    • maybe we need to stop killing everything to find out how special it is, or we’re up next

    • This is awful. Why would you kill this poor thing. What a waste of life.

    • Was it a vegan gator? if it was that explains the increase in cost for Kale.

Better for the environment and sproutheads

    • Good job hunters .. food on the table … LOL at the idiots wondering why kill this………can you say food.. maybe for eating?? hunt on!!!!!!

    • I wonder if all the complainers are vegan?

    • Amamda Mosher | November 30, 2014 at 6:11 am |

I agree 100%. What a gorgeous reptile that lived almost 2 centuries. No reason whatsoever to kill that animal, so unnecessary!

    • I do not understand the reason for the killing! A total sham.. Amazing to me the egos that some people have ego.
Makes you would like to see animals hunt these people down for their egos!

    • Well, it does confirm why the Confederates lost the war, if they were target practicing on it and only hitting the tail? :=)

    • Let’s get a few things straight here. In the States that these PREDATORS reside, hunters are given a set amount of “tags”. There is a LIMIT on how many can be killed by each state every year. Not just anyone can hunt them. You have to go through a process that DNR can keep up with you to ensure you’re not overhunting.

Now, an alligator this size can EAT a small child swimming in the river or body of water that it was in easily. But, I suppose you folks would blame that on the parents, right? That they allowed their child to swim in an area that they were unaware that a large, cold blooded animal that hunts UNDER WATER came up and drug their child underwater in a circular motion (hence the term death roll) until it drowned. I wonder how many of you “OMG poor creature” would be saying this if it ate your dog?! There is a REASON they are hunted. The larger the animal gets the more dangerous they are for humans. They are predators. Why do you think there’s so many of them now? For the exception of the babies (which are HIGHLY protected by the mother) they have few predators to eat them. It’s called the food chain. My mother has worked in Fish and Wildlife for years and witnessed first hand how dangerous these animals can be. And what another poster said is correct they can live pretty much in any body of water that they can fit into. That includes ponds on your precious golf courses.

    • Why kill beautiful baby humans as well? We ARE next, because we are being killed every day.

    • Amber Boudreaux | November 30, 2014 at 8:47 pm |

Josh where are you from? and have you ever seen an alligator up close?

    • John Ornelas | December 1, 2014 at 12:22 am |

I’m okay for hunting for food. However, I wish the proper more correct name for this action be Snipper Hunter and not just Hunter. Lets call it for what it is.

    • Hunters and Hunting is the best form of conservation . When certain species over populate the carrying capacity of the environment in which they live . It is necessary to thin the herd of older mature animals for the overall health of the herd and the species they feed on . Alternative ? Starvation which affects the younger animals and the future of the herd .

    • Wow…people are actually saying “Why kill this creature?” First, it will kill you. These animals are nothing but killers designed to eat; they are not pets. Second, they provide meat, as they are legal to hunt. Quit being an idiot.

    • Bluto Blutarsky | December 1, 2014 at 11:51 am |

What a bunch of Tree Hugging, Tofu Farting, Communist Fairys!! Get over it! Yeah, he was a 185 year old gator which is AWESOME but, we would have never known that had he not been harvested. This is what conservation is all about so get over yourselves, go have a bowl of bean sprouts and leave the hunting to those of us that know what we’re doing.

    • Good point. I used to be an enthusiastic hunter, to my eternal regret. Now the only thing I want to kill are liberal Democrats.

    • Lets face it…y’all have no idea what your talking about.

    • Ummm…money?? thats why kill it you idiots…its ok to eat animals and its ok to make money off them

    • Let us hope none of these hunters were Caucasian, or off duty cops. If so, and they murdered this Gentle Giant, in broad daylight … Al Sharpton and his Riot Brigade will have something to say about this.

Has this Gentle Giant strong-armed any humans to death in its 185+ years? How close was it to residences or parks?

Sorry folks, but I won’t lose any sleep over the death of this croc.

    • This Dustin guy is a moron. “go up to it and try to hug it, then tell me its beautiful.” I find lightning storms beautiful, the sun, space, volcano’s, and basically any animal on this planet. Very few of which I would be remotely interested in hugging… You can find beauty in something from a far, you don’t have to go up and hug everything that you find beautiful like a moron tripping on acid. Point invalid.

    • Im sure you think its cute when they tell you about the puppy bones that were found inside.

    • You catch it and hold it, I’ll tag it.

    • Yes its a shame it was killed. BUT we can not say that it lived a full life… and we have learned a lot – now this is news and research, and forever bonding moment for the hunters, but what about the MILLIONs of other alligators out there? How old are they? Captain Hook may have been running from this guy who knows? lol

    • If it was for food, I will concede. If it was 4 yuppies looking for a trophy then, yeah, im against it. ‘Amateur hunters…’?

    • Barbara Kubicke | December 3, 2014 at 12:51 am |

I agree, Why was it killed ?. what a shame. Just because you are a hunter gives you no right to kill just for the fun of it.

    • I got a better idea! who gives a fuck if it’s dead or not! It wouldn’t have lived forever. You’ve heard the song by Loverboy… Human and Alligator DNA just don’t splice. so shut up! I don’t agree with hunting…. If it’s a dangerous animal that is known to attack then rip it’s fucking head off! thank you 🙂

    • Agreed, killed for the almighty dollar after all that time, shameful

    • Well… I mean… that thing was HUGE and poses a serious threat. That thing will kill the fuck out of you.

It’s my understanding that it was also non-compliant when approached with a peace treaty.

There’s plenty of reason to kill that huge motherfucker.

    • It wasn’t killed for “no reason”.

Hunting in licensed and well regulated in the US. I don’t know the hunting laws where these guys were, but they most-definitely had a license, and probably tags, too (which means a limit in how much they could hunt).

Hunting licenses and tags are issued by state conservation agencies based on a number of factors: including current population of a species and what the impact that species has to the ecosystem.

An alligator is an apex predator. It moves at 12mph on land, 20mph in the water, has the strongest bite pressure on the planet, and a tail that can break your back. Its bite pressure is comparable to a Tyranosaurus Rex.

So, understand that this animal was not an innocent, 185 year old sea turtle that only ate veggies. This was an ergonomic T-Rex with the disposition of a honey badger.

In the Southeast, alligators are a threat to local wildlife and farmers’ livestock. The alligator will eat anything it can put in its mouth – rabbits, rodents, deer, even horses. The species is a threat to the ecosystem if it goes unchecked.

conservation agencies issue hunting licenses in order to preserve the population of alligators — and everything else in that ecosystem. These hunters shot this alligator, and did so with the consent of their local conservation officers.

Hunters may hunt for whatever reason they want: fun, food, etc. But, regardless of the reason, they do so being extremely conscientious of the species, not the animal.

Sure, it’s a little sad to think that this critter made it 185 years, and it won’t see 186. But this alligator was also extremely dangerous, and extremely hard to kill – made evident by the fact that it’s been shot at from before the civil war. But, this was a 185 year old sociopath – from whom your only escape was climbing high in a tree, or locking yourself behind a very thick door.

    • I like guns and I like hunting out of necessity for food but I agree with you on this. It is a shame that this creature lived so long and survived so much just to be senselessly killed by a group of amateur hunters.

    • I’ll take a purse, wallet and a pair of Loafers….

    • Not no reason. For eating, for its skin, and for science.

    • jesse green | December 6, 2014 at 7:26 pm |

Alligators eat Humans perhaps if all those bemoaning its death were to form a line to become food,so those who do not wish to be bitten we could keep these alligators around much longer.Besides how do you do a post morum on a live beast???

    • why did you have to kill it you blood thirsty idiots…your a disgrace to the human race..what ever happened to live and let live…oh no…not for you boys…you have to get your little guns out and kill innocent creatures..feeling proud are we you twats

    • Jim Dearborn | December 7, 2014 at 5:41 am |

Wow.. this creature was 185 years old and that is a miracle in itself when you considered how much humans have done to ruin the environment and the world. We take and take and it still isn’t enough. These guys look so proud to have killed this animal. Scientists say we are entering the 6th and greatest mass extinction, but it isn’t environmental this time it is manmade. What a shame.

    • so, why did they kill this alligator?? so ignorant…

    • For no reason? There is a huge crocodile epidemic in the south eastern United States currently. It is a very dangerous situation.

    • they hunt them for food and there shin is used for many things

    • The gator had Obamacare. The death panel concluded he was too old and had to die.

    • Andre Machielsen | December 14, 2014 at 1:26 pm |

American violent tradition: shoot and kill anything that moves.

    • To the guy named Mike you don’t know much about Florida do you? It’s NOT inbred hicks that deal with the crocs, it’s conservation. The ONLY time you get hicks like these losers involved is when you can’t find the crocodile meaning that the probability of it being a problem croc. are slim to none.

They call themselves hunters – poachers would be a better term seeing as there are VERY specific regulations as to how and where you can hunt. Particularly when they’re NOT from Florida.

These barbarians should be strung up like this poor croc. Survived 185 years only to be brought down by a bunch of rednecks that will probably use a tenth of the body.

    • Thankfully no more dogs, cats, calves, ponies etc. have to be cruelly drowned to death and eaten by this monster. I have seen these critters in action, cowardly animals they are. Their population has exploded here where I live, its only a matter of time before someones child is killed and eaten. I despise Gators and shoot every one I see.

    • Haha that’s things better off dead make a nice soup and mount and oh ya lets ppl know how long they can live that 100 years older then estimated

    • Ashton Sims | May 12, 2015 at 12:34 pm |

How would they know how old it was before they shot it? There’s no possible way that could tell. Come on people! 🙂

    • People. There’s no such saying that A crock. Is beautiful. Some people have A warped sense of no common sense. Folk who live by/in the swamp have 2 make A Living. Go get them All guys.

  2. Fricking loozers,,,,, killing this big boy … talk about BAD KARMA .. Sad non Humans ,,, This BUDS for you !

    • Mississipian | November 28, 2014 at 3:01 pm |

      You sir are an idiot

    • amsterdammer 1 | November 28, 2014 at 4:07 pm |

I only hope they get more respect now they know they can life this long , even after many shots this boy was still okay , so learn from it morons, this animal earn his right to be here .

    • alligatorkiller13 | November 29, 2014 at 2:03 am |

are you freaking kidding me alligator meat is awesome best part is the tail people kill alligators for food or cause of them treating the enviroment i kill deer hogs coyotes squirrels ducks geese you name it if theres a season on it i hunt it

  3. Why did this animal have to die?? Couldn’t they have learned even more if the animal was living?? What were they proving by killing this magnificent animal?? Damn shame.

    • The world needs fancy boots too

    • they were proving they could put food on the table when they shot it. what else do you expect them to learn about gators that they don’t already know?

    • Retarmyaviator | November 28, 2014 at 4:01 pm |

Very typical of uneducated Brits commenting on a subject they know nothing about. There is no shortage of alligators in the southeastern US, so many so that in some areas they are a menace.

If you feel so strongly about protecting them maybe you should consider adopting one as a pet.

    • Hey CL are you a frigging vegetarian..

    • Because every living thing has to die. That’s kinda just the way things are. There is no shortage of alligators. Apparently no shortage uneducated posters too.

  4. I know the men are proud.. I know it is a loss to us… 185 years old and some armatures shoot him… But How were they to know that he was that old? Over 900 pounds and you are alligator hunting… Ask yourself…. What would you do?

  5. TYPICAL YANKS, TRIGGER HAPPY ANIMAL KILLING FOR FUN SCHMUCKS!

    • Mississipian | November 28, 2014 at 3:03 pm |

These men are from Mississippi they are not yanks.

    • Typical yanks??? You mean like the yanks that have saved your limey asses in the last two world wars. Those words should never come out of your mouth. I think what you meant to say was..Those wonderful Americans that we owe so much..If it wasn’t for us you would be speaking German if they hadn’t exterminated you by now so show respect instead of typical limey ignorance

    • Short memories !!

    • Shayne Westmoreland | November 29, 2014 at 3:43 pm |

Im from Mississippi and i feel jipped that i cant legally hunt these ignorant hillbilly assholes… i can dream though

    • We learned our hunting skills from the British.

      This is awkward.

    • I tell you what popo, do you criticize all people of the world for their methods of living? I am sure you do. Now run on down to the grocery store like a good little house wife and grab your prepackaged chicken or beef…after all thats how it comes right? You should find another means of making a living from what you do now before you call anyone else names. sorry excuse for a human you are.
BTW, we have you Eurotrash to be thankful for being trigger happy, after all thats how we kicked your sorry arses out of OUR country, trigger happy “yanks” is what kept you a socialist country instead of a facist one. Go preach somewhere else little girl.

    • Southasianredneck | November 30, 2014 at 10:48 pm |

Thank GOD for YANKS. Your grandfather was not make into a lamp shade. Go eat mutton limey we love Aligator tail. Mutton tastes like butt

    • Not for fun dummy! For food!!!

    • @cecil In WWII the Russians beat the Germans…not the Americans.

    • @Yeah Right You must have a mental deficiency, the Russians win the east front, the Americans bailed the Brits out on the west front, winning there, and the Americans won the Pacific, including Japan.

    • There is a season for alligator hunting, I assume this was done within that season or the hunters would not have posted this. If you disagree with the law, then you need to go through legal means to change it. And I am a Brit living in the States, and “Popo” please refrain from generalizing people you know nothing about. That just proves your ignorance, and embarrasses educated Brits.
