A German tourist could face up to 15 years in an Ecuadorian prison after he paid locals to kidnap a Galapagos turtle and bring it to his hotel room where he allegedly sexually molested the animal for several hours.
Herman Guttenberg, 46, is presently detained by Ecuadorian authorities and could face a prison sentence of up to a maximum of 15 years on charges of “poaching an endangered species, bestiality and altering the local ecosystem of the archipelago.”
The 115-year-old turtle which goes by the name Eleonor, in honor of one of Charles Darwin’s daughters, is said to be alive and well but has suffered severe intestinal bleeding but should recuperate soon told Galapagos National Park experts.
A shocking scene
The hotel owner, Eduardo Guadalupe, says he was shocked when he found the man naked next to the giant 817-pound turtle.
“The turtle was on its back, its legs spread out, it kept moaning in pain and couldn’t move. There was blood on the floor, it looked like its anal cavity was bleeding,” he told reporters.
Police officials have also seized Guttenberg’s laptop which allegedly contains several videos of the man sexually assaulting the 115-year-old turtle reads to the police report.
