The young man suffers from many severe lacerations as well as five broken ribs but his life is no longer in danger. He however suffers from a severe case of post-traumatic stress which could affect him for the rest of his life.
“All I saw was this huge brown mass coming down on me with lightning speed” says Mr. Peterson, still shaken by the event.“The beast slapped me around five or six times, and then it suddenly tore off my pants… It was horrible! I thought I was going to die, and then I heard gunshots and it all stopped.”

The 600 pound male was shot by park officials while he was assaulting Mr. Peterson. It was shot a total five times before it finally fell dead, nearly crushing the poor man who was still underneath it.
The young man who lives in the nearby town of Leadville, is well-known of the park police as he has been arrested multiple times in the past for various illegal activities related to poaching. Park officials were actively tracking him at the time of the aggression as they suspected him of laying traps and collars in the area and were trying to catch him in action.
It is still unclear why the gigantic bear attacked Mr. Peterson, but it seems that it could have believed that the young man was a female grizzly bear. Mr. Peterson was in fact wearing a brown fur coat and had covered himself in bear urine to scare away wolves and coyotes.

Colorado park officials explained during a press conference in Denver, that the bear’s behavior was unusual but not especially disturbing and that the population has no reason to worry.
Grizzly bears usually hibernate for 5 to 7 months each year, emerging in April or early May, but over recent years many specimens have been emerging from their state of inactivity in early winter because of climate change. Scientists have observed that these bears were particularly aggressive due to the lack of food at this time of year.
It is the first recorded sexual assault by a grizzly bear on a human being in the history of the United States and most experts believe that the rare and specific conditions which rendered it possible make it very unlikely that it could occur again in the near future.
