Monsanto Creates First Genetically Modified Strain of Marijuana

St-Louis, MO | Monsanto, the multi-billion agribusiness giant, has announced today it has patented the first genetically modified strain of marijuana.

The news that has been welcomed by scientists and leaders of the agriculture business alike as a move forward towards the industrial use of marijuana and hemp products could bring a major shift towards marijuana policies in the U.S.A. and ultimately, to the world.

Under present US federal law, it is illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate marijuana, since the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, although it has been decriminalized to some extent in certain states, Monsanto’s interest in the field has been interpreted by experts as the precursor to “a major shift in marijuana policy in the US” as it is believed the company would not have invested so much time and energy if it had not had “previous knowledge” of the Federal government’s “openness” towards the future legalization of marijuana.

Advocates for the legalization of marijuana see the bold move of Monsanto to work on GM marijuana strains as a “great step towards legalization on a massive scale” in the US

Lawyer and marijuana law specialist, Edmund Groensch, of the Drug Policy Alliance, admits Monsanto’s involvement in marijuana projects could definitely help the pro-legalization activists.

“Currently, Federal law criminalizes marijuana and hemp derivatives because public opinion is still against it and legal commercial production in the U.S. is currently handled by a patchwork of small farmers whom are not trusted by investors. A major player as Monsanto could bring confidence within government and towards investors in the market if it were to own a large part of the exploitable lands and commercial products”

Other experts, such as James Adamson, president of Medical Marijuana Technologies, believe the only way marijuana is to become legal in the US is through the branding of a GM strain

“There is presently no way to control the production of marijuana and the quality of the strains. A GM strain produced by a company with the credentials and prestige of Monsanto would definitely lend a massive hand to pro-legalization activists within certain spheres of government and within the business world” he explains.

Although Monsanto’s testing on cannabis is only at an experimental stage, no plan has yet been released by the agriculture business firm as to what purposes the patented strain would be used for, although specialists believe answers should come this fall as rumors of a controversial new bill which could “loosen up laws around medical marijuana” is reportedly scheduled to pass before congress coming this fall.

Critics fear genetically modified cannabis will mix with other strains and could destroy the diversity of DNA, a reality dismissed by most studies claim experts.

  1. “Other experts, such as James Adamson, president of Medical Marijuana Technologies”??? ” A company with the credentials and prestige of Monsanto”???? What, can’t you see here? This guy is a wanna bee. A kiss up to Monsanto shows. Cannabis does not need screwing with, just so a corporation can screw us some more and make money. “could destroy the diversity”??? What we are worried about is using seed from last year, that gets half its genes from Monsanto as pollen. How are we responsible? And how could we prevent it.

Big companies like Monsanto will only hurt the cannabis gene pool and business. Before you know it they will be charging a surcharge on any cannabis plant that has monsantos genetic markers. They are a greedy and vile company only concerned with making money with no regard to how it affects our planet! They need to be charged and prosecuted for all the harm they have done!

If someones Pollen gets on my plants without my permission. I will sue them for trespassing.

    • control your seed production, keep a female in the tent and turn one of her branches male(teiramisa mist or something).
100% female seeds and perfect reproduction of the mother 😀

    • When you have politicians bought and paid for this is the result. Obama is nothing more than a Monsanto sock puppet and Hillary has been a Monsanto whore for decades. Monsatan needs to be put out of business.

    • Agreed

    • I totally agree. This is super bad news. NOTHING monsatan has ever been involved with is healthy. Nothing. All they make is poison

    • What are you talking about? Cannabis breeders have been messing with the plant’s genes for centuries, and some seed banks are multimillion-dollar businesses. Green House Seed Company is trying to become the first billion-dollar cannabis company, built solely on their claims of superior cannabis genetics. The legal cannabis markets in the western US are already dominated by wealthy investors. Are you scared of the possible outcomes, or of the brand?

Monsanto is poison, GM cannabis is not needed. Monsanto being destroyed is what is needed.

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

    • I agrre 1005 with you. They are the most Evil corporation in the world giving more and more people cancer from their insane genocidal maniac Bill Gates, one of the most wicked human beings that ever walked the map

    • hypothetical question (as i have not indulged in marijuana use this century this question is, for me, purely hypothetical) if the involvement of companies like monsanto is the only way for marijuana to be legalized and brought into the mainstream in terms of utility and usage,,, would u be in favor of allowing them in??

I have to say this is not going to be good. Any time one of these huge companies gets involved greasing money to campaign. Then bomb they will give Monsanto a huge contract to make marijuana legal, and make all of it come from Monsanto. I know this company they destroyed are water where i used to live and gave tons of money to my town for people who where drinking the water got some kind weird drug in the water that effected a lot of people Anniston AL. They are no good for pot. Giant companies leave no way for anyone whos wants to grow breed make any kind of living from cannabis this could probably effect you. California has got it right. You get medical card and can grow some plants of your own. I dont like recreational because if you want a job with a medical marijuana card its prescribed, Colorado you try get a job nope not prescribed. Recreational would be fine if they took cannabis off of most drug test for companies, and that you could grow a certain amount of your own, I would be for it. But I like the Cali medical right now. Even though i dont live there.

    • If any pollen gets in your plants, Monsanto will sue you for patent infringement.

Look, Monsanto is largely owned by Phizer, the pharmaceutical company. Congress has patented a strain of cannabis. No doubt Monsatan is in bed with Congress critters on the destruction of cannabis because they both see a potential for profit. Monsanto makes us sick, then Phizer sells us meds. It’s a marriage made in hell. Then Congress gets in bed with all of them and they’ll make it so only Monsatan’s derivative from the congressional patent is allowed….and only by licensed and monitored growers who will spray the crop according to Monsanto’s instructions….with their proprietary sprays.

This won’t help people, and it sure won’t help decency at all.

      Amen!

  3. What can we do about it? Put a Ban GMOs initiative on your county ballot, like Mendocino County has done.

    • I’ll be working as hard as I can towards taking Monsanto down. Everything they touch is questionable at best. I’ll be damn if I want them tampering with my medicine. March Against Monsanto May 23rd in cities world wide. Find a march near you and help us stamp our this corrupt corporation!

    • GMO technologies have been beneficial for decades, all over the world. Banning GMOs is not the solution to any problem.

    • Darlene. Please give one example of how gmo foods have been beneficial (besides lining the pockets of corporate shareholders). Just one.

    • Nathan. Insulin injections. That’s one, I could give more, but you only asked for one, so there it is.

    • hackepeter | April 15, 2015 at 7:49 am |

Sean: “Please give one example of how gmo FOODS have been beneficial”

    • They genetically modify the plant so it can withstand, and coincide with the extereme poison. If they modified it to increase THC or something it wouldn’t be soo bad.

    • We tried here in Maui County, but the Big Monsanto Lawyers held it up in court, and crooked judges rule it invalid.

    • Nathan (and others) I give you Wheat, genetically modified by Norman Ernest Borlaug and he won the Nobel Peace Prize for doing so. He is known as the Man Who Saved a Billion Lives because his wheat kept whole nations from massive famine (India, Pakistan, Turkey primarily). Look at drought-resistant and pest-resistant corn. Geez, you put a label like GMO on something and people freak. We’ve been genetically modifying plants and animals for centuries.

    • Dare, If you actually do a bit of research you will find that Norman Ernest Borlaug was given all his well-deserved accolades for “breeding” high yield, short straw wheat, NOT for genetically engineering them.
The genetically modified pesticide resistant corn you are crowing about has been proven to also kill the beneficial flora(bacteria) in the guts of animals that eat it(that’s us too btw…)
Finally, just to be clear, we have NOT been genetically modifying plants and animals for centuries. We have been using selective breeding within species over generations to accentuate preferred traits while eliminating undesirable traits and for the record, we have been doing that for thousands of years before a “gene” was even thought of.
Genetically Modified Organisms are the result of gene splicing that is a relatively new development which takes genes for a completely different species and implants it into the host to change it’s DNA so that it can be patented and become a cash cow for people that don’t give a genetically modified rat’s ass about what it does to the populous.
Please feel free to come back once you know what you are talking about.

  4. So… it’s ok for Monsato to possess/fondle/tinker with Marijuana in ST Louis .. WHERE IT’S “ILLEGAL” ..

Big corporations don’t have to follow the laws of the slaves.

  5. They already messed up corn with gmo’s

    • IF YOU OR I START TELLING EVERYONE WE ARE BUILDING A BETTER CANNABIS PLANT WE WOULD BE IN JAIL AND IF ITS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT.THEY ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY NOT FOR THE KIDS AND ADULTS WHO NEED IT BEEN DOING CANNABIS FOR 42 YEARS AND NOW ALL THE LARGE COMPANYS AND MILLIONAIRES ARE ONES DOING IT.MOM AND POPS DONT STAND A CHANCE. THATS LIFE

    • Corn has always been and will always be a GMO since before we were even a nation. Get your facts straight. The incas and the mayans genetically modified corn, Monsanto only has the patten.

    • BarleySinger | April 16, 2015 at 5:29 pm |

This is to ADEL. There is a massive difference between normal breeding and GM tech. You cannot get scorpion genes into a tomato through normal breeding (and there are there in the GE tomatoes). The entire point of the GE seed market is to OWN the genetics on which the entire worlds eats.

    • How so? I get better yields and use less pesticides.

    • How do you figure they have messed up corn? Im an Iowa corn farmer so id like to hear your explanation on this one.

    • Adiel and Keith,
